Print making - Starting April 2027
The courses are suitable for all abilities and the small class size means that you will get individual tailored attention. We will look at themes that are inspired by nature and the natural environment. Classes are small and this course will run with a maximum of 4 people. All sewing machines will provided but do feel free to bring your own.

Course Summary
We'll look at 3 techniques - etching, lino, collagraph, taking 2 weeks for each techniques.
My teaching style is aimed at helping you build confidence to enable you to be able to develop your ideas. The courses are suitable for all abilities and the small class size means that you will get individual tailored attention. We will look at themes that are inspired by nature and the natural environment.

WEEK 1: ETCHING 1.
Line, Tone & Intaglio Basics
Introduction to intaglio printmaking and drypoint plate materials
Preparing designs, and choosing compositions
Exploring mark making, cross-hatching, and tonal contrast depth
Preparing paper and trying initial test prints using the etching press
WEEK 2: ETCHING 2.
Inking Variations & Plate Refinement
Exploring different inking techniques: full wipe, surface tone, and selective wiping
Considering any edits on plates
Printing a small, consistent edition of finished drypoint prints
WEEK 3: COLLAGRAPH 1.
Plate Construction & Relief Textures
Consider image
Understanding collagraph: building a raised, textured plate on board
Applying materials—fabric, sand, string, lace, wallpaper,
Exploring cut-out textured surfaces
Sealing plates with shellac or varnish to prepare them for inking
WEEK 4: COLLAGRAPH 2.
Combined Inking & High-Relief Printing
Learning inking: combining intaglio (in-groove) and relief (surface) inking on one plate
Experimenting with colour directly on the plate using rollers and scrim
Printing a series of prints
WEEK 5: COLOUR LINO PRINT 1.
Planning, Registration & First Layers
Designing a 3-color composition using reduction lino methods
Understanding layer order (lightest to darkest) and precise registration techniques
Safely cutting the first layer to preserve white/paper highlights
Rolling, mixing ink, and printing the first colour layer
WEEK 6: COLOUR LINO PRINT 2.
Layer Overprinting & Final Editioning
Cutting the second and third stages of the block for mid-tones and dark key lines
Troubleshooting registration alignment, ink drying times, and layer coverage
Presenting a finished 3-colour lino print
