6 Week Courses
Landscape and Stitch - Starting January 2027
The courses are suitable for all abilities and the small class size means that you will get individual tailored attention. We will look at themes that are inspired by nature and the natural environment. Classes are small and this course will run with a maximum of 4 people. All sewing machines will provided but do feel free to bring your own.

Course Summary
This course will allow you to explore creating landscapes with painterly mark making tha we will transfer on to fabric and sew in. We will work with remnant fabrics, sublimation printing and machine embroidery
My teaching style is aimed at helping you build confidence to enable you to be able to portray your ideas into
design on paper
We'll look at mark making and abstract wash technqiues, observe the landscape, use layered fabric, applique, sublimation printing and machine embroidery
WEEK 1:
Looking at inspiration sources based on landscape themes
Working directly on paper with ink and washes and mark making
Looking at composition, line and framing
Developing a personal colour palette and an inspiration mood board
WEEK 2:
Using mark making from last week we'll start sewing straight into a few pieces to create samples.
Start building confidence on the sewing machine
Experimenting with stitch density, direction, and machine mark-making
Exploring preliminary layering and preliminary fabric manipulation
WEEK 3:
Exploring fabric selection—translating landscape elements
Combining machine stitch with traditional hand embroidery
Experimenting with raw edges, fraying, and distressed textile techniques
Creating a series of stitched fabric swatches to test landscape textures
WEEK 4:
Selecting your favourite samples and concepts to plan a larger piece
Scaling up designs and mapping out compoistion
Exploring free-motion embroidery or different stitches
Prepping base fabrics, selecting materials, and setting up the final composition
WEEK 5:
2 weeks to work on a final piece
Using remnants, printed fabric
Applique and stitch
